PortCastelló is aware that it cannot tackle its Innovation Strategy on its own and can only reach its aims in constant contact with other Port Community stakeholders. It is now time to be extremely proactive by boosting our own innovation strategy which is underpinned by the Port’s ability to inspire and influence. This entails stepping up partnerships with the port community and end customers who have to be provided with the co-creation spaces needed for incubating and fast-tracking ideas and projects. However, the seedbed in these venues will not be able to flourish unless there is the right connectivity with industry and technology networks and emerging innovation hubs. Accordingly, we have to lead or promote port programmes in conjunction with business, technology, university and financial players.
This is where the APC works in the innovative ecosystem, known as Castelló PortLab, which is developed through the Innovation Strategy.
Sandbox
The Port of Castellón is positioned as an ideal environment for promoting innovation. Thanks to its infrastructure, it acts as a true sandbox or testing ground, offering companies the opportunity to assess the feasibility of their prototypes and innovative projects in a real environment.
Underwater Robot – CIRTESU
The Centre for Research in Robotics and Underwater Technologies (CIRTESU) at Jaume I University carries out experiments in underwater wireless communications using its advanced remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) at the Port of Castellón. These tests, conducted in a real port environment, allow progress in the research and development of marine underwater technologies, promoting their practical application and improving their performance in real operational scenarios.

Renaturalisation and Revitalisation of the Port Area – Ocean Ecostructures
This pilot project, carried out by Ocean Ecostructures at the Port of Castellón, aims to regenerate marine biodiversity through six biogenerative structures: three carbonated structures and three 3D-printed ceramic structures. These have been installed in two strategic areas of the port, where their impact on the renaturalisation and revitalisation of port waters will also be monitored.

MU-COAST Project
The MUCOAST (High-Resistance Urban Furniture for Marine Environments with Aesthetic Finishes) project is a research and development initiative aimed at creating a new concept of urban furniture specifically designed for demanding marine environments.
Led by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the project is carried out in collaboration with the Port Authority of Castellón, whose facilities serve as a real testing environment. This allows innovative materials and solutions to be tested and validated under the demanding environmental conditions of the port.
