PortCastelló invests over €514,000 in wheel washers to prevent particles spreading into sorrounding areas

18 March 2024

2024-03-01. The Port Authority of Castellon has invested over €514,000 since 2020 in installing two wheel washers for lorries at the port’s North and South Docks. The outlay is split between buying the equipment for €182,800 (not including VAT) and fitting and ancillary works coming to €99,796 at the North Dock and €232,087 at the South Dock respectively.

The purpose of the initiative is to lessen the spread of particles from lorry treads by spraying pressurised water on the lorries’ wheels and underside.

The measure, financed by Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan Next Generation funds from the European Union, mitigates the spreading of particulate matter by road traffic while also helping to reduce the particles’ size.

Work for the project included building the reinforced concrete structure for installing the equipment, setting up a layby on the exit road, water supply and drainage pipelines and electrical wiring for operating the equipment.

Environmental protection measures

This action is one of the 18 environmental protection measures the Port Authority has rolled out to minimise the emission of particulate matter into surrounding areas.

These initiatives include real-time public information on air quality in the port’s environment via its website, installing dust-trapping screens and bringing in a Code of Good Environmental Practices to regulate solid bulk handling operations conducted in the port area.
