PortCastelló hosts 2nd Innovation Forum

15 November 2023

II Foro de Innovación

15-11-2023. The Port Authority of Castellon today hosted the 2nd Innovation Forum, bringing together around one hundred attendees who had the chance to learn firsthand about PortCastelló’s innovation, digital transformation and sustainability policy.

The event was opened by Manuel García, Director of the Port Authority, together with Joaquín Membrado, Secretary General of the Valencian Region Innovation Club.

Manuel García argued that the “mission of ports includes effective unlocking of innovation in all its aspects as the main lever for their transformation” as reflected in the recent Strategic Framework approved by the State-owned Ports Body.

Manuel García pointed to PortCastelló’s commitment to energy projects and energy transition, including electrifying its quays and backing rail as a means of transporting freight through the port’s southern rail access. “These projects will enhance efficiency and mitigate environmental impact,” he said.

The Port Authority of Castellon attracts innovation through the Ports 4.0 initiative, a groundbreaking programme run by the State-owned Ports Body and the port authorities to support and foster the application of talent and entrepreneurship in the Spanish public and private logistics and port sector against the backdrop of the 4th industrial revolution.

PortCastelló is also partnering with the regional government to set up a technological hub in the port. A number of port facilities are being considered to host this project which is designed to bring together high-tech and innovative digital companies and businesses. The Smart Ports Chair has additionally been promoted in conjunction with Jaume I University to drive smart ports research, training and innovation.

The conference featured presentations by María José Rubio, head of PortCastelló’s Blue Growth Department; Bernat Ibáñez, its head of Innovation; Javier García, the director of the Emergency Centre; and José Luis Vilar, CEO of PortSur. The event was organised by the Port Authority of Castellon, the PortCastelló Foundation and the Valencian Region Innovation Club.
