PortCastelló and Univesitat Jaume I will create the Smart Port chair

5 July 2022

05-07-2022. The Port Authority of Castellón and the Universitat Jaume I will create a Smart Ports chair. This is an action included in the roadmap that both institutions have set out to strengthen collaboration between them with the aim of promoting research, innovation and training linked to the port and logistics sectors.

The Smart Ports Chair will be directed by Francisco Toledo Lobo, Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the UJI, and its goals are to promote research, training, knowledge, development and innovation in the area of smart ports (known as Smart Ports), ports that take advantage of the use of technology to update and improve maritime transport, making their port processes and services more effective, in order to achieve greater efficiency and satisfy the needs of customers and users.

The chair is configured as an open forum to which the Port Authorities who wish to join, as well as the companies that work with the ports and technology companies, can join. The Smart Ports Chair will be aligned with the strategic framework of Puertos del Estado, serving as an instrument for the determined promotion of its seventh strategic line “Digital port administration. Intelligent and synchromodal ports”, directly related to the ninth UN Sustainable Development Goal.

The Chair will initially carry out research activities (carrying out studies and research and advisory work and offering grants related to the Chair’s area of interest), training activities (organizing training courses, seminars, conferences and workshops), outreach activities (creating and maintaining a web page with information on the activities of the Chair and its results, periodically distributing a newsletter with news related to Smart Ports, awarding prizes for doctoral theses, master’s theses and final degree projects related to Smart ports) and will create a think thank on the matter with representatives of the entities linked to the chair.

The president of the Port Authority of Castellón, Rafa Simó, referred to the importance of strengthening synergies with the UJI, and specified that this chair means “on the one hand, strengthening our strategic alliance with the UJI to attract talent to the port and that that talent thinks of the port, and it will also allow us to continue working to connect the logistic-port world with the technological-innovative world, and thus gain in competitiveness”.

Rafa Simó has recalled that the objectives of the new strategic framework of PortCastelló is to approach knowledge and build bridges with those institutions that are the basis of innovation and research

For her part, the rector of the UJI, Eva Alcón, highlighted that in the collaborative space of this chair “the UJI will contribute knowledge from different fields, including technology, to contribute in an innovative and creative way so that port activity can grow sustainably.
