PortCastelló has a network of five fixed air pollution control stations that have continuous PM10 and PM2.5 suspended particle meters and meteorological sensors on the perimeter of the port area, fully integrated into the Valencian Surveillance and Control Network. of Atmospheric Pollution (RVVCCA) and accessible from its website for all citizens.
During the first half of 2022, none of the average PM10 particle values recorded at each of the stations exceeds the value of 40 µg/m3, the annual limit value established by Royal Decree 102/2011 on quality improvement from air. The limit value of 35 µg/m3 agreed in the agreement with the Generalitat Valenciana is not exceeded either. On the other hand, the Port Authority is committed not to exceed the daily limit value of 50 μg/m3 on 30 occasions, this number of exceedances being more restrictive than that set by current regulations. This standard has also been met, since only 6 exceedances of the daily limit value attributable to port activity have been recorded.
It should be remembered that the Port Authority of Castellón was a pioneer at the state level in signing the Agreement signed with the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Transition, which formalizes the voluntary agreement for the improvement of air quality, which regulates the control of emissions from potentially polluting activities in the atmosphere to achieve lower air quality levels than those indicated in current regulations. In this context, work is being done on the constant improvement of these data with follow-up meetings of the agreement, expansion of the number of dust trap screens, installation of wheel washers, daily monitoring of operations or specific training for members of the port police and of the port community.
The president of PortCastelló, Rafa Simó, has declared that “the objective data on air quality, in addition to showing compliance with the regulations and with our commitments to the Generalitat, represent a boost for the work that has been carried out by the Port Authority of Castellón but we are aware that there is still room for improvement and we are going to continue investing and working so that these data are better and better”. Thus reinforcing the firm commitment to protect the environment.
