Next Thursday, September 8, the port of Castellón will host an incredible show to commemorate the V Centenary of the Magellan-Elcano Tour of the World. It is “La roda del viento” by the famous flamenco pianist David Peña Dorantes.
The port of Castellón has chosen that date because it is then that the 500th anniversary of the return of the expedition of Magellan and Elcano to the port of Seville is celebrated, after leaving on October 20, 1517 in search of a passage to the south of the coast of Brazil. A trip from which only 18 of the 239 men who left Sanlúcar de Barrameda returned.
The event will be held at the Levante dock in PortCastelló at 10:00 p.m., with the Mediterranean Sea as a background to transport the public to the dangers encountered by the expedition in its odyssey to discover a new Spice Route.
La Roda del Viento is inspired by that event that marked a before and after in international maritime communications and that will allow you to feel the adventure of the enthusiasm of the origin of the trip, the restlessness of the route, the splendor of the unknown, the exhaustion of the death, the finding of a new route and the triumph of the challenge.
In addition, within the acts of commemoration of the 5th Centenary of the Tour of the World, the port of Castellón organizes the exhibition “Around the World in a Click”. It will take place in the Moruno Building of Grau de Castelló from September 5 to 28 in collaboration with the Spanish Association of Playmobil Collectors, a non-profit organization that will recreate the feat of Magellan and Elcano through scenes with these toy pieces , and panels and world maps that will show the visitor the objectives of the trip, the biographies and the discoveries. Likewise, lecterns will be installed with each of the scales of the expedition.
These two activities are part of the new cycle of Al Port, an initiative that was launched last January and which aims to strengthen ties with the environment and generate an attractive maritime façade for citizens with a differential program of activities and complementary.
