02-12-2021. The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, Mireia Mollà, and the president of the Castellón Port Authority, Rafa Simó, have signed a pioneering agreement that aims to improve air quality in the port environment.
This is the first agreement of this type to be signed with a port authority in all of Spain and is part of the strategy of the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and state and regional regulations. These regulations establish the possibility of formalizing voluntary agreements between the competent bodies of the autonomous communities (Conselleria in this case) and the economic agents (PortCastelló) as a tool to reduce the pollutant load emitted into the atmosphere.
The formal act of signing between Mireia Mollà and Rafa Simó was held this morning despite the fact that the agreement has been in force since last July 5. Since then, three meetings have already been held between both parties for the development and implementation of the agreement. The councilor has valued the five stations in Port Castelló, connected to the 53 stations that make up the Valencian Network for the Monitoring and Control of Atmospheric Pollution. The results of the measurements of the stations located on the perimeter of the port area are made public through the air quality website of the Conselleria, the transparency portal of the Generalitat, the GVAire mobile app, and on the web portal from PortCastelló.
The installation of the meters is part of the 18 environmental protection actions of the Castellón Port Authority related to the reduction of particles in the atmosphere.
On the other hand, the concessionaires that carry out activities of loading and unloading of powdery material in the Castellón port area can adhere to the voluntary agreement by acquiring the commitment to adapt their procedures and operations to the recommendations contained in the Code of Good Practices approved in 2020 by the Board of Directors of the Port Authority.
The president of PortCastelló has highlighted the importance of an agreement “with which we fulfill the double commitment to environmental sustainability and public transparency”. In addition, Rafa Simó has highlighted the importance of the port of Castellón growing in a sustainable and respectful way with its environment.
For his part, Mollà pointed out that the Valencian Community “once again is at the forefront of the state in terms of ecological transition” and has highlighted the proactive negotiation of the Ministry to add allies to improve air quality.
