28-09-2021. These figures position the port of Castellón as a logistics tool at the service of the sector, which accounts for 38% of the total traffic of the port area so far this year, compared to 31.6% in the same period of the previous year. Specifically, up to the month of August, a total of 13,670,234 tons of ceramics-related goods have been moved in the port of Castellón.
The connection between the port of Castellón and the sector is reflected in solid bulk traffic, which increased by 45.4% in the first 8 months of the year compared to the previous year. Thus, PortCastelló records in the accumulated of the year 4,443,526 tons of solid bulk. It grows in all types of raw material traffic: kaolin 54%, feldspar 50%, zirconium 48% and clays 33%.
In fact, the port of Castelló has closed the month of August as the best month in its history in solid bulks, and this type of traffic is consolidated in second place in the Spanish port system, at a great distance from Tarragona, its immediate competitor . This is due to the dynamism of the firms settled in the province. In this sense, the president of the Castellón Port Authority, Rafa Simó, has highlighted the resilience shown by the sector in times of crisis and has valued the work carried out by the Port Community. Rafa Simó has indicated that reaching this benchmark position in solid bulk traffic is linked to the implementation of best environmental practices. “Our goal is to grow in a sustainable way, as set out in our Strategic Plan,” and that involves investments in environmental protection and implementing operations that are increasingly respectful of the environment. ”
The president of the public body has referred to the two milestones in environmental protection that have marked the last year, such as the approval of the Code of Good Environmental Practices and the signing of a pioneering Air Quality agreement with the Generalitat Valenciana.
The importance of the sector for the port of Castellón is reflected in the bonuses that it approves to encourage this type of traffic and that also “help the economic and social development of the environment.” During this 2021, the Port Authority of Castellón is applying discounts of up to 40% in the maritime stopovers of containers, and of up to 35% in the merchandise rate. It also applies up to a 20% discount on the rate of merchandise linked to the export of tiles and frits, and a 5% to the import of raw materials from the sector.
