The replica of the Nao Santa María docks at the muelle de Costa

5 September 2018

The vessel arrived this morning at PortCastelló and will be open to the public tomorrow Thursday until Sunday the 9th of September, from 10.00 until 21.00. The visit of this ship to the Port of Castellón is one of a series of events organised by the Town Council of Castellón to mark the 767th anniversary of the foundation of Castellón.

The visit consists of a self-guided tour of the five decks, where members of the public will find information panels about the history of the ship, and ornamental objects from the that period of history, enabling visitors to get a feeling of what a sailor’s life was like 500 years ago.

The ‘Nao Santa María’ is one of the most famous ships of all time. On the 12th of October 149, captained by Christopher Columbus, it took part in one of the most significant historical events in human history – the discovery of America.

The modern version is a faithful replica of the exact same size and weighs 200 tons, is 29 metres long and 8 metres wide. It has four masts and five sails and is made of iroko and pine wood. It was launched last March. Now it has arrived in PortCastelló where it will be open to visitors for five days.
