The President of the Port Authority of Castellón, Francisco Toledo, and the managing director Roberto Arzo this morning visited the Oropesa lighthouse building accompanied by the mayor Rafael Albert, the councillor for local heritage Mari Carmen Taulé, the councillor for Oropesa ‘Si se puede’ Arantxa Martinez, who presented a motion on this matter.

The visit was organised after the commitment taken on by Toledo to visit the lighthouse himself and to inspect its present condition with a view to looking for possible future uses for the building which includes making uses of the land surrounding it. The port authority has proposed that it might be declared a site of cultural interest (BIC)

Rafael Albert said,“I would like to thank Francisco Toledo and Roberto Arzo for taking the time to visit the lighthouse after the meeting we had in Castellón and I hope that soon a working group will be formed in order to put this wonderful building to good use. We could organise tourist visits just as we do at the ‘Torre del Rey’

For his part, Toledo stated that in his opinion, “the lighthouse was of a unique type in Spain….we have seen that the building is well preserved but in order to make full use of it it will be necessary to to do a considerable amount of work both on the interior and exterior. It is necessary to set up a work group as soon as possible in order to determine what is the best use that can be found so that we can extract real benefit for the purposes of attracting tourists. It is situated in a wonderful place, in fact it is more than a lighthouse since it is set on the rocks right next to the sea there are many possibilities.”
