The new South Basin. A promising future

In 2009 the last stage of the ambitious plan to expand the port, begun at the beginning of the new Century, was finalised when the new South Basin was inaugurated. The total public and private investment in the project was 1000 million euros, the greatest investment in the history of the port. After five years of construction work a new dock area of 217 hectares was reclaimed from the sea, with 3,870 metres of water front, and a water depth of 16 metres. Two million square metres of new space were created in front of the Serallo Industrial area, a tenfold increase in the surface area of the port for the installation of new plants and logistic centres for the petrochemical sector and the direct and indirect creation of 2000 new jobs.

Terminals for the transport and production of clinker, biodiesel, fertilisers and the storage of liquid waste from ships have already been installed around the South Basin. This new terminal is the principal focus for the future development of PortCastelló, and looks destined to become a key Mediterranean maritime terminal.

To complete the great works of expansion of the South Basin, the Port Authority has recently carried out the dredged of both the entrance channel and of the South Basin and has made up the prolongation of the eastern breakwater. Both constructions let improve port operation conditions and to increase the supply infrastructures provided. The first work, dredging of the entrance channel, has led let the access to the Port of Castellón of bigger vessels. The prolongation of eastern breakwater consists of an unique and innovative breakwater that closes the harbour mouth and it completes the protection against gales and intensifies the infrastructures provision for the cruising traffic commitment of the port.
