1902. The port of Castellón is born thanks to the export of oranges

The foundation stone for the Levante Quay, the first structure of the Port of Castellón, was laid in 1891, though officially the port came into being in 1902 when the Port Works Committee was formed.
The origin of the Port of Castellón is clearly linked to the need to export products coming from the province of Castellón. The primary product in the early years was citrus fruit (mainly oranges) which was exported by sea to the principal markets of Europe in significantly greater quantities during the last quarter of the 19th century.
In 1906, the chief engineer José Serrano Lloberes, prepared the General Plan for the Port. In this year traffic through the port went up to 60,000 tons and by 1912 this had grown to 80,000 tons. Oranges represented more than 80% of this annual traffic, but at the same time the export of tiles became a characteristic feature of the merchandise handled by the port in this early period. Most of these ceramic products came from the factories of Onda, a small town fifteen kilometres from Castellón and to this day the centre of the ceramics industry of the province.
