A History of the Port of Castellón

The hundred year history of the Port of Castellón has been characterised by steady and continuous growth, in traffic, in infrastructure and by the manner in which it has overcome the difficulties brought about by the need to make the large investments necessary for expansion while confronting the challenges of periodic economic downturns. The original traffic of the port was provided by the production of citrus fruit, the local ceramics industry and the activity of the fishing port. In the 1960s the construction of the petro-chemical complex in the Serrallo industrial estate greatly increased the traffic of the port. By the mid nineties the port was being transformed from a small area closed off from the town into an important Mediterranean maritime terminal, with the new South Basin doubling its capacity. At the same time the marina, sports facilities and commercial areas were integrated into the surrounding urban area creating an important attraction, open to local people and tourists alike.
